2010 College Retreat #5 – “I Forgive You”

Scripture: Matthew 18:21-35

Theme: Talk Your Walk: “I _______ You” – How the gospel enables us to say the things we need to say but often don’t.

Many families never said these five simple phrases: “I love you”, “I am hurt by you”, “I need you”, “I apologize to you”, and “I forgive you. ” Sometimes these things were assumed. Other times, these things were never addressed.

This extends to our lives and relationships today. We don’t tell people we like them or love them–we figure they should know by our actions. We don’t tell people we’re upset with them–they’ll have to guess based upon our demeanor. It’s risky to tell someone “I need you.” What if they reject us? And we might never say “I’m sorry, please forgive me.” So if we never tell each other “Please forgive me” we’ll probably never tell each other “I forgive you.”

But the gospel of Jesus Christ enables and instructs us to say these vital statements to one another. Our theme for this retreat is Talk Your Walk: “I ______ you”: How the gospel of Jesus Christ enables us to say things that may be hard for us.
